Maximize Tire Life, Safety, and Performance with These Expert Tips from Ray’s Tire Barn
1. Check Tire Pressure Regularly
Under-inflated tires lead to uneven wear, poor gas mileage, and can even cause blowouts. Over-inflated tires are more likely to be damaged by road hazards. Keep your tires inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI (found in your owner’s manual or door jamb) for optimal safety, fuel efficiency, and longevity.
2. Monitor Tread Depth
Your tire’s tread is what grips the road. If the tread gets too low, your vehicle loses traction—especially in wet conditions. Check for built-in tread wear indicators, or use a penny test. If the tread is worn, it’s time to replace your tires.
3. Rotate Your Tires
Not all tires wear evenly. To maximize tire life and maintain consistent performance, rotate your tires every 5,000 to 8,000 miles, or as recommended in your vehicle’s manual. This promotes even wear and extends tire life.
4. Don’t Skip Tire Balancing
When new tires are installed, or if you're feeling vibrations while driving, balancing is key. Properly balanced tires reduce wear, eliminate vibrations, and improve ride comfort.
5. Keep Your Wheels Aligned
Wheel alignment ensures your tires are making the correct contact with the road. Misaligned wheels cause uneven wear, reduce fuel economy, and can make your vehicle pull to one side. If your steering feels off, it’s time for an alignment.
